Winter Apps & Digital Tools
Useful digital tools, what to use them for, and what to check before relying on them.
Choose tools for a job: understand the forecast, prepare a map, check access, or communicate. Then practice using them before you need them.

Utah Avalanche Center tools
Start with UAC’s official app and digital-resource directory for avalanche information and supported tools.
Before you go: open the current forecast for the right region and check its issue time. A stored forecast does not update without a connection.

CalTopo
Build a map and prepare offline layers for your planned area and alternatives. CalTopo’s documentation explains which subscription supports mobile offline downloads.
Before you go: download the actual map layers, not only the route. Test your map with data connections off.
Read the offline setup guide ↗

Gaia GPS & onX Backcountry
Compare these mapping options through UAC’s resource directory. Check each provider’s current layers, access information, subscription requirements, and offline instructions.
Before you go: make sure the chosen maps cover the full route and your alternatives. A map display does not confirm that a route is open or appropriate.

Wasatch Backcountry Skiing map
A local terrain-name and planning reference linked by UAC. Use it to support a conversation about terrain and location.
Keep in mind: a named run is not a recommendation for today’s conditions. Pair map research with the forecast, access rules, and appropriate training.

UDOT Traffic & NWS
Keep official road and weather resources easy to reach on your phone. Check the drive as carefully as the destination.

Utah grooming & OHV resources

Check grooming information and the state’s motorized recreation resources, then verify current access with the land manager.
Keep in mind: grooming is not an avalanche forecast.
Make your phone part of a bigger plan.
Have a navigation backup, protect power in the cold, and know how you will communicate if cellular service is unavailable. No app guarantees rescue, current access, or stable snow.
Build the skills. Keep learning.
Use these resources alongside hands-on training, current conditions, and sound decisions in the field.
