Winter Conditions & Trip Planning
The trusted Utah sources to check before leaving home—and again when the day changes.
Snow, weather, and the drive.
- Utah Avalanche Center ↗Regional avalanche forecasts, avalanche problems, observations, and education. Select the correct region and current issue date.

- National Weather Service — Salt Lake City ↗Mountain weather forecasts, warnings, and forecast discussions from the Salt Lake City office.

- UDOT Traffic — Roads, restrictions, and cameras ↗Road conditions, cameras, closures, and restrictions. Follow posted restrictions and official directions.

Check Avalanche Control Closures
An open road does not mean nearby backcountry terrain is open. Check UDOT’s current closure notices and map, follow posted boundaries, and give avalanche control equipment space. Never climb on or tamper with a device.
Access and destination information.

Other Utah access resources
- Utah Outdoor Recreation — OHV resources ↗Start here for Utah motorized recreation resources and current requirements; confirm route access with the responsible land manager.

- Utah Snowmobile Grooming ↗Find grooming information for Utah snowmobile trail areas. Grooming helps with trip planning; it does not establish avalanche stability or override closures.

Turn information into a group plan.
- Choose the right area. Match the forecast and access information to your actual destination.
- Read beyond the headline. Discuss avalanche problems, weather changes, and any closed terrain.
- Set the limits together. Agree on terrain to avoid, a turnaround time, and a lower-commitment alternative.
- Recheck before departure. Conditions and operations can change overnight and during the day.
